Updating Messenger?

Should I download Messenger 6.0?

You can read our Yahoo! Messenger 6.0 review at Messenger 6.0 Review.

Known Yahoo! Messenger 6.0 Issues

1) No Emotions appear. Use the View>>Emotions List option to show them.
2) The user-list scroll bar does not move. Instead of dragging the bar, use the up/down arrows.
3) Chat does not load. You have to go through the procedure twice, as the transition to chat does not appear.
4) Some buttons don't appear skinned. This could be a resource issue, this messenger is more heavy on graphics, if you're using an old PC, it might do this.
5) LaunchCast does not load. This is an issue with Norton's Ad Blocking features. See the how-tos.
6) Voice Issues. We know about these, no solution though.
7) Invite/goto/follow User missing. You can type the commands /invite username - /goto username - /follow username in the chat input box to use these

Add-Ons

Most add-on programs should now work, all of ours do!

Offline Messages

Offline messages in Yahoo! Messenger 6.0 are deleted as soon as you close the offline message viewer as in Yahoo! Messenger 5.6. So even if you didn't read the messages, they get deleted!

What if I don't like it?

If you don't like it, you can still download the 5.6 versions, which could range from a few minutes for fast Internet users, to 30 minutes + for slower modems. You COULD however, retain the 5.6 install file, so you don't have to download if you wish to go back!

How to retain the 5.6 install file

Copy this file: c:\program files\yahoo!\installs\ymsgrie.exe to a new location, such as your desktop, but not in the Yahoo! folder.

Backing up Smileys/Emotions/Archives

If you are uninstalling or updating you should make a backup of these files if you use them/made customisations.
Customised Emotions: c:\program files\yahoo!\messenger\emote_user.dat and emoete.dat
Customised Smileys: c:\program files\yahoo!\messenger\media\smileys\
Archives: c:\program files\yahoo!\profiles\username\Archive

To backup, I simply mean copy the folder (right click, select copy) and paste into another, NOT the Yahoo! Program Files folder.

Going back to 5.6

Remove 6.0 first:
Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
Select Yahoo! Messenger and choose Remove.
Then run the install file you copied before you installed 5.6 (if you did it) or get the download file from:

Support

Yahoo! Help still has 5.6 Support files!
