Messenger Chat

Messenger Chat Client

Yahoo! Messenger now has a chat client for the Yahoo! Chat service.  To access this, select "Chat" from the main screen.

You will now be presented with a list of chat rooms.  Please note, this room list will correspond to the country from where you downloaded the Yahoo! Messenger from.  Double click the category to view the roomnames.  If you want user rooms, select the user room tab.  When you see the room you want, double click it.

If you need roomlists for other countries, try YahRooLS.  You can also see the roomlists at: http://xx.chat.yahoo.com/c/roomlist.html  change xx for your country code, like de for germany, fr for france.  When you locate the name of a room you want to enter, DONT CLICK it, but copy it, then in messenger (go into any room) type /join roomname and hit enter.

Explanation of roomlist

roomname (5) [v3][w2]

roomname - This is the name of the room you wish to enter, such as Yahoo! Chat Help
(5) - This indicates 5 users.  Remember these are updating all the time.  40 means the room is full.
[v3] - This indicates there are 3 users using the voice chat facility in this room.
[w2] - This indicated there are 2 users broadcasting webcams.

Emotions

To view the list of emotes, press the red "Y!" on the toolbar above the chat line.  To use an emotion, double click it.  To aim an emotion at a user, click it once, select a user, then select emote user.  To make your own emotions, see http://www.helpbytes.co.uk/emotions/

Font/Colour/Size

You can edit these as you wish from the toolbar above the chat input line.  Select the pallete, and color effects to use effects such as blended colours.

Smileys - Emoticons

Press the smiley button above the chat input line, and choose the smiley.  Out of 60 smileys, only 35 are shown here.  The rest can be seen here, http://www.helpbytes.co.uk/smileys.php, just write the code into the messenger chat input line, or http://www.helpbytes.co.uk/smileyutil.php for a small menu to auto insert the codes of all 60 smileys.

Explanation of userlist

A user with a grey smiley face beside their name indicates you have them on ignore, they WILL see your text, but you CANNOT see their text.

A user with a TV set as a smiley, means they are broadcasting their webcam.  Right click their ID, and select view webcam.  They must give permission if you want to view their cam.

A user with a microphone as a smiley, means they are in voice chat.  You only see this if you are in voice chat.

Adding a user as a friend: Right click on their ID, select Add as friend
Ignoring a user: Select their ID, click "Ignore User".
Viewing a profile: To view more information about a user, right click, and select "View Profile".  Doesn't work? Click here for the fix.
Viewing basic info: To view age, Yahoo! ID etc... just hover over a username.

Changing Room

To change room, click "Chat" on the toolbar.  This should really say "change room", but it doesn't!

Broadcast cam

To start broadcasting your cam, click the webcam button.  Make sure you did all the cam compatibility tests first.

Voice Chat

To start voice chat, so you can talk and/or hear people, select "voice".  Re click the button to turn it off.
