Have you restarted?

Ensure you are not running too many programs at the same time, it uses a lot of memory this new messenger.

Yes I have restarted many times...because it locks my computer up after the error message.

Do a full uninstall (start, settings, control panel, add/remove) then download again. If it persists, try going back to an old messenger www.helpbytes.co.uk/updatingMessy.php has info on how.

As stated above, I do not know, you could try the old messenger instead...

I believe I have figured out the source of the error, "YPager.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows," as I chased it for a week after rebuilding and reloading my computer. I tried everything: downloading it on two different drives (C and D), with and without Symantec's "Auto Protect" enabled, with and without Symantec installed, with and without Cookies enabled, and even going as far as downloading Messenger from both the UK and Canada - and nothing worked.

Two days prior to my beginning the reformat of mine I loaded IM on two friends computers, and downloaded it on my at work as I was going to copy the Install program (from that computer) and load/install it on mine here at home, which did not work. Still, it worked flawlessly on the other three I had loaded on. Why theirs and not mine?

What I found it to be was a problem with the new 6.0 version of IM, because of all the new "security features" being designed to run on the NTFS file system - which doesn't seem to be backwards compatible with the FAT32 file system. That causes a problem with Windows 95/98 users and users who install Windows 2000 Professional with the FAT32 file system (as is the case with mine).

It seems that if a user has been with IM and has "Upgraded" to the newer versions along the way - then it still works. But, if a user uninstalls and reinstalls it, or reformats their computer and tries to go directly to the "New 6.0 Version" (using FAT32) the error occurs.

I found a website that has archived all the past versions of IM - I went there and downloaded version 5.0 - it worked like a charm. So try this: uninstall Messenger (through Control Panel) - and then delete the Yahoo! folder listed in the "Programs" folder using Explore (Right Click on the My Computer icon and click Explore).

When that is complete log on to: http://www.freecreed.com/ymsgr-archive.html - scroll to the bottom of the page and click on version 5.6.0.1358 - download that into a Folder (you) created on your desktop and launch the install application from there. It worked flawlessly (for me).

The guy who owns this website also has a "yupdater" program that will kill the annoying, "Would you like to upgrade now" message that pops up every time you launch IM. The best of luck to you.

Thanks for that...

On my own PC I use XP and NTFS.
On another PC I use, I installed from scratch, it's FAT32 but I had no problems!

You can kill the updater by deleting it or renaming it: www.helpbytes.co.uk/disupdate.php see here

Another source of these illegal operation errors is skinning applications interfering with the rendering of Yahoo! Messenger 6.0, such as AlienWare or WindowBlinds.
