Disable Yahoo! Auto Update

Auto Update

Yahoo! Messenger is set to prompt automatically to download an update once one is made available. This cannot be turned off, and is annoying when you don't wish to upgrade, or specifically downgraded and the pop-up keeps on coming back.
This process can also greatly improve the connection speed to Yahoo! on dial-up users access!

Our Solutions

Easy Solution: Go into the folder c:\program files\yahoo!\messenger\ and rename the file 'yupdater.exe' to something else, such as '_updater.exe'. Yahoo! will then fail to find the file and no more prompts!
Firewall Solution: Disable yupdater.exe any access on your firewall. Depending on the firewall, you can either select "NO" when prompted the first time, or go into its control panel and disable all access!

Warning

Remember this stops you being notified of updates! Should an important update become available, you wont know!

Resetting

To put it back to normal, rename the file back to 'yupdater.exe' or re-enable it access on your firewall.
NOTE: Once you upgrade or re install yahoo! messenger, yupdater.exe will exist again. So if you used the easy solution, auto update will be enabled once more!
